Ingredients for Bhang Recipe:

  • Milk – 1 litre
  • Water – 2 cups
  • Sugar – ½ cup
  • Saffron Strands (Kesar) – 2 pinches.
  • Almonds (Badam) – 1 tbsp.
  • Cannabis Powder (Bhang Seed Powder) – 10 tbsp.
  • Peppercorns (Kali Mirch) – 10 units.
  • Cardamom Powder (Elaichi Powder) – ½ tsp.
  • Watermelon Seeds (Dried) – 1 tbsp.
  • Poppy Seeds (Khus Khus) – ½ tbsp.
  • Rose Petals (Gulab Ki Patti) – ¼ cup
  • Aniseed – ½ tbsp.

Note: The cardamom powder is available in stores. But you can also make cardamom powder at home.

Steps for Bhang Recipe:

It is very simple to prepare the bhang Thandai for Holi at home. It gets ready within minutes. Follow the steps below to make the Bhang.

Pre-Preparation:

Boil the Milk:

  • Take a saucepan and place it on the stove.
  • Add 1 litre in the saucepan and turn on the flame.
  • Boil the milk until it gets well boiled.
  • Now, turn off the flame of the stove.
  • Let it cool down to normal temperature.
  • Keep the boiled milk aside for a while.

Soak the ingredients:

  • Now, take a large sized bowl.
  • Add 2 cups of water in the bowl.
  • Soak ½ tbsp. Aniseeds and 1 tbsp. Almonds.
  • Also, add 1 tbsp. Watermelon seeds to soak.
  • Mix 10 tbsp. bhang seed powder in this bowl.
  • Then add ¼ cup of chopped Rose petals.
  • Keep these ingredients to soak together.
  • Let them soak for around 1 hour.

Make Smooth Paste:

  • After 1 hour, take the soaked ingredients.
  • Strain these soaked ingredients properly.
  • Add them into a mixer-grinder jar.
  • Grind them until you get a smooth paste.

Make the Bhang Thandai:

  • Now, take a clean large bowl.
  • Line this bowl with a muslin cloth.
  • Transfer the smooth paste into the muslin cloth.
  • Add some remaining water and strain the paste.
  • Collect the strained liquid into this bowl.
  • Then add ½ cup sugar in this bowl of liquid.
  • Add 10 units of kali Mirch (peppercorns) in the liquid.
  • Also, add ½ tsp. Elaichi powder (cardamom powder) in the liquid.
  • Also, add a few saffron strands and mix everything very well.
  • Then blend this liquid mixture with the boiled milk.
  • Take a spoon and gently stir the prepared bhang Thandai.
  • Now, transfer the liquid into serving glass.
  • Add few ice-cubes into the Bhang Thandai to make it chilled.
  • Serve Bhang Thandai Immediately.

And the Bhang Thandai is ready!

Note: You must strain the liquid properly before mixing it with the milk.

The little sip of this drink can make you feel tipsy and little hazy. So, drink the Bhang Thandai carefully and do not overdrink it. Once you have more than your capacity to handle, wait for at least 90 minutes before having another glass.

Before you want to have one more glass of Bhang Thandai, decide whether you can have more or not. To make a little less strong bhang Thandai, you must use very less Bhang Seeds. It would take up to more than 2 hours for the complete effect of Bhang to go away.

Garnishing Ideas:

Garnish the Bhang Thandai with some chopped nuts and saffron strands. Prior to serving, you can also garnish the Bhang Thandai with the rose petals or mint leaves.

Serving Suggestion:

You must make sure that this beverage is chilled enough before you can taste its refreshing flavours. To ensure its chilled enough, you must refrigerate it. Before you can serve it, you must keep it in the fridge for 2 to 3 hours for chilling. It must be chilled and settled before you can enjoy drinking it.

Serve this Holi special drink infused with the bhang powder in the earthen cups or pots. You can also serve your bhang ki Thandai in tall and fancy serving glasses. Serve it cold with some chopped cashews or almonds. Add in some ice cubes and serve it extremely chilled.

  • You can also add various other spice powders like ginger powder or fennel powder.
  • Always use the warm milk for making the Bhang.
