Ingredients Required for Vermicelli Upma Recipe:

  • Vermicelli – 1 cup
  • Water – 1 cup
  • Onion (sliced) – 1 piece
  • Green Chili – 2 pieces
  • Curry Leaves – ¼ cup
  • Grated Coconut – 2 tsp.
  • Peanuts – 2 tbsp.
  • Mustard – 1/3 tsp.
  • Cumin – 1/2 tsp.
  • Urad dal – 1/2 tbsp.
  • Chana dal – 1/2 tbsp.
  • Oil – 2 tbsp.
  • Hing – a pinch
  • Salt – as per taste

Note: Vermicelli is also known as semiya. Use Saffola Active oil when cooking.

Method for Making Vermicelli Upma Recipe:

  • Take a pan and add oil in it. (buy non-stick pan online)
  • Heat the pan and let the oil heats up.
  • Add mustard, cumin, Urad dal, Chana dal and peanuts to the pan and fry them until peanuts turn golden brownish.
  • Add a pinch of Hing.
  • Now add chilli, curry leaves, and onions to the pan.
  • Fry it for 2 minutes.
  • Roast vermicelli on medium flame. Roast properly until they turn golden and try to avoid burning.
  • Also, mix water and salt and stir it and start boiling it.
  • Now as the vermicelli gets roasted, add the boiled water and stir it well to avoid lumps.
  • Cook on medium flame.
  • Wait for the water to get absorbed and evaporated.
  • Cover the pan and let it cook for 2 minutes.
  • Sprinkle Grated Coconut over it.
  • Serve it HOT!

Note: Fry the peanut till they are brown but do not burn them.

You can make many food items from the vermicelli-like fried fritter, sweet desserts, salty snacks, etc. It is usually available as whole in the market but it’s preferred to make it fresh at home from the all-purpose flour or wheat flour. You may choose any flour, there would not an alteration in taste or texture, only the difference arises with respect to health.

There is no special cooking requirement to make vermicelli upma at home. It’s simple and same as preparing upma with an additional roasting of vermicelli. The light on health upma can be eaten plain or paired with spicy chutney or pickle.

Remarks:

  • You can add green peas and potatoes too.
  • You can also use tomatoes and bell peppers.
  • If your kids do not like this dish then try adding sugar in it. Sweet vermicelli upma also tastes good.
  • You can use patanjali cow ghee too while making it

Garnishing:

  • Garnish it with coriander leaves.
  • Top it with raisins.
  • Serve it with curd.
