Mars Incorporated produces a variety of chocolate bars. The original British version offers a chocolate bar made of caramel and nougat, which is covered by a milk chocolate coating.

This recipe was meant to resemble Milky Way, a chocolate bar that appeared in the United States in the 1920s. Today, they remain just as delicious and are still in high demand. And this is for a good reason too… Mars Chocolates are delicious and decadent without costing too much.

Mars Chocolate Bar History

It all started in 1932 when Forrest Mars (son of Frank C. Mars – American candy maker) rented a factory in Slough. With 12 employees, he started to create the first chocolate bars consisting of caramel, nougat, and milk chocolate.

The composition of the original product has changed over the years, but the black and gold-edged packaging was a real hit worldwide. Despite their popularity, Mars chocolate bars were not a favorite among American consumers.

Nowadays, the company manages to attract US customers, too. The brand is said to have helped fight obesity in the UK (2008) when the weight of the product was reduced by 4.5g (from 62.5g to 58g). Then, in 2013, the Mars bar was reduced to 51g, and it now contains 260 calories.

Mars in the United States

The Mars candy bar in the United States is different from others around the world. Although some changes were made in 2002, the American version of the Mars bar was relaunched on the market in January 2010.

Back then, the candy bar was distributed exclusively in Walmart stores. However, in some stores in the United States, you could also find the European version of the Mars candy bar. However, at the end of 2011, distribution was interrupted again.

They returned in September 2016, when Ethel M Chocolates (a subsidiary of Mars) began producing chocolate using the original American recipe and selling them in their stores and on Amazon. Unlike all other Mars candy bars (including Snickers Almond), it does not contain caramel.
