Tomato Soup Recipe at Home

Ingredients for Tomato Soup Recipe:

The ingredients required for making restaurant-style tomato soup at home are common and easily available. You need would fresh, juicy and pulpy tomatoes along with basic other Indian condiments and spices.


  • Tomatoes – 4 medium size
  • Onions -⅓ cup
  • Butter – 1 ½ tsp.
  • Bay Leaf- 1 piece
  • Black Pepper Powder- ½ tsp.
  • Red Chilli Powder- ¼ tsp.
  • All Purpose Flour – 1 tbsp.
  • Garlic – 3 cloves
  • Sugar- 1 tsp.
  • Fresh Cream- ½ tsp.
  • Green Coriander Leaves
  • Water – ½ cup
  • Salt to taste

Note: If you want, you can replace butter with the coconut oil. And also, you can use coconut cream as a substitute for fresh cream. You can also use the 1 tsp. of corn starch in the place of all-purpose flour.


  • Bread Slices – 2 or 3 slices of bread
  • Butter – ¼ tbsp.

Note: It is simple and easy to make the bread croutons at home. For the healthy version of croutons, you can use the brown bread or whole wheat bread instead of white bread.

Method of Tomato Soup Recipe:

The Preparation of tomato soup is divided into main two sections. If you are planning to make the tomato soup at home, then you have to begin by making tomato puree. Then make the base tomato mixture having other ingredients. Follow the steps and make it easily.


  • Wash and clean the tomatoes properly. Remove their stem and cut them in big pieces.
  • Finely chop or crush the garlic cloves. Transfer it to a small bowl.
  • Rinse the onions and the red chillies. Finely chop them.

Note: Deseed the red chillies before chopping.

Toast Bread:

  • Heat the non-stick frying pan and keep the butter or ghee to melt.
  • Place the bread on the heated pan and let it toast on the low flame.
  • Wait till it becomes crispy and brown from one side.
  • When once side is properly toasted, flip the side and let it brown,
  • You can add some butter in between if you want.
  • Once the bread is toasted, take it off from the pan to the plate.
  • Your bread should have golden texture. Cut it into small cubes.
  • Follow the same process with rest of the bread slices. Keep the chopped bread pieces in a small bowl.

Tomato Puree:

  • Take a large thick-bottomed saucepan or pressure cooker.
  • Now add chopped tomatoes and ½ cup of water.
  • The water should be enough for tomatoes to get totally submerged in it. So pour in 3 to 4 cups of water for 4 medium sized tomatoes.
  • Then sprinkle the salt and turn on the stove to medium flame.
  • Bring the water to boil and with the close lid pressure cook for up to 2-3 whistle.
  • Let the tomatoes be in the boiled water for around 30 minutes.
  • When cooked, switch off the flame and allow the tomatoes to cool.
  • Now, you can open the lid when the air escapes from the cooker
  • Now, drain the water and then peel off their skin. Remove the seeds (if any).
  • Transfer the boiled potatoes to the blender jar and make a puree of the tomatoes.
  • Now strain the liquid with the help of a strainer.
  • Keep the tomato puree aside in a small bowl.

Note: You can use large hollow pot for making tomato puree. If you want to chop the tomatoes after they are boiled directly above the blender.

Tomato Soup:

  • Take a pressure cooker or a pan, heat it on the stove over a medium flame. (check this prestige pressure cooker)
  • Add 1 tsp. of butter in it. Let the butter melt.
  • Then add the bay leaf and sauté for few seconds.
  • Now, when the bay leaf is fried and crispy, add the ½ tsp. of finely chopped garlic.
  • Sauté the garlic over the low flame for a while but do not brown it or burn it.
  • Then, add the finely chopped onions and let it cook.
  • Fry until onions become translucent.
  • Discard the bay leaf.
  • Pour in the tomato puree and mix everything well.
  • Now, once again take another pan heat it on a stove.
  • Add ½ tsp. of butter to melt. Now add all-purpose flour and fry it for 1 minute.
  • When the flour is fried or roasted evenly, then mix the tomato puree spice mixture you prepared.
  • Add in slowly in the pan with the all-purpose flour.
  • While you are adding the puree, continuously keep stirring to avoid lumps.
  • Let the mixture come to a boil.
  • If the soup is too thick add some water accordingly.
  • Now sprinkle the salt, red chilli powder and black pepper powder.
  • Give a gentle stir and mix well.
  • Now add sugar and once again stir well to mix every ingredient properly.
  • Simmer the soup for 3-4 minutes while stirring in between intervals.
  • Lastly, mix the cream and simmer for a minute.
  • Properly stir it to mix well and switch off the stove.

And the sweet tangy tomato soup is ready!

Note: Keep the flame medium and let the soup come to boil on its own. You can also have to stir the mixture continuously as the flour paste might settle down.

The method we have used for making the tomato puree is simple and easy. We have strained the tomato puree to get the smooth and thin consistency. But we have not strained the tomato soup. You might think that without straining, the onions and garlic won’t blend with tomatoes but that is incorrect. The pungent taste of onions and the spicy flavours of the garlic are felt while we are having the soup, even if we do not strain it. However, if you wish to have a tomato soup with a smoother consistency, then there is one more method by which you can make tomato puree.  Below mentioned are the steps for the second method.

Another Method for Making Tomato Soup at Home:

  • You have to heat a pan and add ½ tsp. of butter.
  • When the butter is melted, then add bay leaf and ½ tsp. of crushed garlic.
  • Sauté the garlic till it starts to release the aroma.
  • When raw smell goes away, add the finely chopped onions to the pan.
  • Cook the onions, sauté them till they become golden.
  • Now add the chopped and boiled tomatoes.
  • Pour in the water to the pan.
  • Season the mixture with the salt.
  • Put the lid, cover the pan and cook till the tomatoes become soft.
  • Now, switch off the flame and wait till the mixture cools down a bit.
  • Discard the Bay leaf as you did in the first method.
  • Transfer this mixture to a bowl or pot.
  • Then with the help of hand blender blend everything in the.
  • Strain the puree through a soup strainer.
  • Transfer this puree back to the heated pan.
  • After you pour it back, sprinkle some black pepper powder.
  • Season the mixture with the sugar.
  • On the low flame, simmer the soup and bring to boil.
  • Pour in the water to get the required consistency.
  • When the soup is boiled, add cream. Mix everything and switch off the flame
