Let’s learn to make Chana Masala Powder step by step at home.

Ingredients for Chana Masala Powder Recipe:

  • Dry Pomegranate Seeds (Anardana) – 1 tbsp.
  • Black Pepper (Kali Mirch) – 2 tsp.
  • Cumin Seeds (Jeera) – 1 tbsp.
  • Cinnamon Sticks (Dalchini) – 4 pieces.
  • Cloves (Lavang) – ½ tsp.
  • Coriander Seeds (Dhania) – 3 tbsp.
  • Cardamom Seeds (Elaichi Seeds) – 2 tsp.
  • Red Chilli Powder – 1 tsp.
  • Black Salt – 1 tsp.

Note: You can also use 7 to 8 dry red chillies and then you crush them into powder.

Steps for Chana Masala Powder Recipe:

It is very easy to prepare the Chaat Masala Powder at home. Take the whole spices and individually dry roast all ingredients. Roast everything except any spice powders. Allow the roasted whole spices to cool and then mix in plate and put them in a grinder. Grind all the whole spices into powdered form.

Dry Roast the Whole Spices on Pan:

Take each of the whole spices one by one and dry roast each of them on a pan.

Dry Roast Pomegranate Seeds:

  • Take 1 tbsp. dry pomegranate seeds (Anardana).
  • Add them to plate and clean these seeds.
  • Pick the stones or other impurities from it.
  • Take a thick bottomed non-stick pan.
  • Place it over stove and switch on the stove.
  • Add the dry pomegranate seeds on the pan.
  • Keep the flame of the stove to medium and dry roast them.
  • Wait till they become aromatic.
  • After roasting, turn off the flame.
  • Then, transfer them into a large mixing plate.
  • Keep this plate with the pomegranate seeds aside.
  • Let them cool down for a while.

Note: Discard the pomegranate seed with the insect bite or the moles.

Dry Roast Cumin Seeds:

  • Now, clean the pan with dry kitchen cloth or napkin.
  • Once again place it again on stove and switch on the stove.
  • Take 1 tbsp. Cumin Seeds (Jeera) and pick stones from it.
  • Check for the other impurities and clean the cumin seeds.
  • Add the cleaned cumin seeds into pan and dry roast them.
  • Roast them on medium flame till they are fragrant.
  • Transfer them into the same plate as Pomegranate Seeds (Anardana).
  • Let these two roasted seeds cool down for a while.

Note: Do not over roast the cumin seeds. Otherwise they would become hard and taste bitter.

Dry Roast Coriander Seeds:

  • Now, again clean the pan with dry cloth.
  • After properly cleaning it, place it on the gas.
  • Take 3 tbsp. coriander seeds (Dhania) and clean them.
  • Pick stones & other impurities from it.
  • Check for hidden moles and insect bites as well.
  • Discard the dirty seeds and scan each seed properly.
  • Clean the coriander seeds and add it into pan.
  • Dry roast them on medium flame till they are brown.
  • Transfer them into the same mixing plate as cumin seeds.

Note: While roasting the coriander seeds, you must not burn them.

Dry Roast Other Spices:

  • Now, let all these 3 spices cool down.
  • Let them cool down for a while.
  • Meanwhile, pick and clean other spices as well.
  • Roast the cinnamon stick, cloves, cardamoms and black pepper.
  • Also, let these roasted spices come to room temperature.
  • Now, start preparing for grinding these whole roasted spices.

Make the Chana Masala Powder:

  • After all the ingredients are cooled, take the mixer grinder jar.
  • Take this mixer-grinder jar and clean the jar with dry cloth.
  • Now, add all the roasted spices one by one in this jar.
  • Also add cardamom seeds (Elaichi seeds) and black pepper (kali Mirch).
  • Then add the cloves (Lavang) and cinnamon sticks (Dalchini).
  • Break the cinnamon stick before adding it to the mixer grinder jar.
  • Now, add the red chilli powder and black salt in the jar.
  • Then, start the grinder and grind the mixture well.
  • Grind all these whole spices into a very fine powder.
  • Now, transfer the chana masala powder into a plate.
  • Let the chana masala powder cool down.
  • Sieve the fine powder of the Chana masala.
  • If you find some whole particles, then once again grind it.
  • Again transfer the grinded powder to the plate and mix.
  • After the Chana Masala Powder is completer ready, let it cool.
  • Once the Chana masala powder comes to room temperature, take it from plate.
  • Transfer it into an air-tight container and tightly close the lid.
  • Store it in the air tight container. Keep in some dry and cool place.

  • Dry Mango Powder (Amchur) – ½ tbsp.

  • Bay Leaf (Tej Patta) – 1 unit
  • Star Anise (Chakri Phool) – ½ piece
  • Nutmeg (Jaiphal) – a small piece
  • Rock Salt (Kala Namak) – ¼ tbsp.
