Kala Chana Chaat Recipe

Ingredients for Kala Chana Chaat Recipe:

  • Black Chickpeas – 1 cup
  • Chaat Masala – 1 tsp.
  • Chopped Coriander Leaves – ¼ cup
  • Dry Mango Powder – 1 tsp.
  • Green Chili (Finely Chopped) – 1 or 2 pieces
  • Lemon Juice – 2 tsp.
  • Onion (Finely Chopped) – ½ cup (1 medium sized onion )
  • Raw Mango (Finely Chopped) – 1 mango (Optional)
  • Roasted Cumin Powder/ Bhuna Jeera Powder – 1 tsp.
  • Red Chili Powder – 1 tsp.
  • Tomato (Finely Chopped) – ½ cup (1 medium or large sized tomato)
  • Salt – as required

Note: You can use either dried black chickpeas or the cooked chickpeas. If you are using the dried chickpeas then take 1 cup or else use 2 ½ cups of cooked black chickpeas.

You can use white chickpeas or green chickpeas to make Chaat as well.

You may add or skip any spice powder or ingredients based on your choice. Even the proportion of the spice powders, chilies and salt can be adjusted to the taste suitable to your taste palates.

Method for Kala Chana Chaat Recipe:

Pre-Preparation:

  • Take the dried black chickpeas to the colander and clean them under running water.
  • After you have washed them, soak the dry chickpeas in a bowl having enough water for 8-9 hours.
  • Once you have soaked them till they become soft, then drain the excess water from the chickpeas.
  • Add these soaked chickpeas into the pressure cooker having sufficient water.
  • After adding enough water, switch on the stove and cook the chickpeas.
  • You have to pressure cook them on high flame for 6-7 whistles or until they are cooked.
  • Wait till the cooker cools a bit.
  • Open the lid when the air escapes on its own.
  • Drain the water from the cooked chickpeas.
  • Transfer them to a bowl and keep aside.

Note: If you have a plan of preparing the Kala Chana Chaat from before, then the keep chickpeas to soak overnight.

Preparation:

  • Now take a deep mixing bowl and add the boiled Chana in it.
  • Also add the chopped onion, tomato, and the green chili.
  • Sprinkle all the spice powders, whole spices, and herbs you are using.
  • Mix all the ingredients of the mixture properly.
  • Then squeeze in some lemon juice for the extra tart.
  • Season the mixture with the salt to taste.
  • Again, with the help of a spoon, mix everything well.
  • If you are using raw mango then add it at this stage.
  • Sprinkle some fresh chopped coriander leaves over the Chaat.

And the tasty Chana Chaat is ready to eat.

Note: Once the Chaat and everything else is mixed, check the taste. If you feel the need of any spice powder then add. Also, check for the taste of salt as well.

Kala Chana Chaat was something which I have heard a lot about but unfortunately, I haven’t tasted it until once when we went to Shimla. I had tasted their version of this Chana Chaat. There in the toy train, the vendor was selling this Kala healthy and tasty Chana Chaat. He also mixed fried yellow Chana dal in it. Here I have not added the yellow Chana dal to give an authentic flavor. You can be flexible with the recipe and add any other Dal or spices of your choice to make it more flavorful.

Black chickpeas are very nutritious. They provide the high amount of protein. Even it is advised to have black chickpeas during pregnancy. Now pregnancy is a time when we like to eat spicy food so ladies you can have this Kala Chana Chaat! It is almost a no-cook recipe if you have already cooked black chickpeas. In this case, you do not need to soak the chickpea overnight and then the only thing left would be to mix the ingredients. This Chaat has a balance of various taste and flavors in it.
