Ingredients Required for Making Poha Upma Recipe:

  • Asafoetida/ Hing – 1 pinch
  • Chana dal – 1 tsp.
  • Coconut (Grated) – 2 tbsp.
  • Coriander leaves – ½ cup
  • Curry Leaves – ¼ tsp. (1 sprig)
  • Cumin – ½ tsp.
  • Green Chilies (Chopped) – 2 green chilies
  • Lemon Juice – as needed
  • Mustard Seeds – ½ tsp.
  • Oil – ¼ tsp. (use saffola oil)
  • Onion (sliced) – ¼ cup (1 medium size)
  • Peanuts – 2 tbsp.
  • Poha – 2 cups
  • Salt – as per taste
  • Tomato (chopped) – ¼ cup (1 medium size)
  • Turmeric Powder – 1 pinch
  • Urad dal – 1 tsp.
  • Water – 250 ml

Note: Poha is also known as flattened rice. It is optional to use the freshly grated coconuts in this recipes. But if you add coconuts, it would give its own taste and flavours to the Poha upma.

Similarly, adding tomatoes is also based on your choice. You can add any other vegetables if you want like carrots, peas or potatoes. If you use these veggies, then boil them before adding to your Poha upma.

Method for Making Poha Upma Recipe:

Soak Poha:

  • Take the packet of Poha, remove the Poha from packet and transfer to a colander. (buy easy-to-use colander)
  • Wash the Poha under the running water and clean the Poha properly.
  • Once you have thoroughly washed the Poha, drain off the excess water from the colander.
  • After you have removed the excess water, set the Poha aside for a while.
  • Now, take a bowl, add Poha in it and pour in water enough to soak the Poha.
  • Allow it get soften, then again drain all the water in which you have soaked the Poha.
  • Let the Poha settle for a while. Wait till all the moisture is absorbed.
  • Break the lumps formed with thin the Poha and keep the bowl aside.

Note: After you have washed the Poha with water properly, soak them only if you are using the harder type of Poha. If you already the soft Poha, then you can skip soaking them in water.

When you make Poha recipe, firstly wash them and drain the dirty water immediately. The Poha should always be soft, so soak only if needed.  Do not forget to drain the excess water in which you have soaked them.

Prepare Poha Upma:

  • Take a non-stick pan and heat oil in it over a medium flame.
  • As the oil heats up and starts to crackle, add the peanuts, Chana dal and Urad dal in the pan.
  • Then mix in the Hing, mustard seeds and cumin seeds in the mixture.
  • Fry these ingredients and mix them until they become golden.
  • Now stir in the chopped onions, along with the fresh curry leaves and fry till onions turns brownish.
  • Sauté the onions till they become translucent and starts to release the pungent aroma.
  • Once the onions are cooked, and the curry leaves become crispy, then add the chopped tomatoes (if you are using them).
  • Now sprinkle the turmeric powder with the pinch of salt to the mixture and mix it.
  • Wait till the tomatoes are cooked. They should become mushy, soft and their raw smell should disappear.
  • When all the veggies and spices are cooked, transfer the soft Poha to the pan.
  • Mix everything well on a medium flame and let the ingredients blend with each other.
  • Add in the grated coconut over the mixture and again give a gentle stir.
  • Let everything warm for a while, keep it covered for a minute.
  • Squeeze lemon juice over it and mix it.

And the delicious Poha Upma is ready to eat. Serve it HOT!

Note: Add Poha only after other ingredients are cooked. If you are using other vegetables, then add them along with tomatoes. Also while cooking the Poha, do not let the Poha dry up.

If you the find the Chana Dal or Urad Dal hard to eat, then soak them in warm water for about 40-50 minutes before adding to the tempering.
