Tomato Upma Recipe

Ingredients Required to Make Tomato Upma Recipe:

  • Rava (Semolina) – ½ cup
  • Water – 2 cups
  • Ghee – 1 tbsp. (use patanjali ghee)
  • Mustard Seeds – ½ tsp.
  • Cumin Seeds – ½ tsp.
  • Urad Dal – 1 tsp.
  • Chana Dal – 1 tsp.
  • Few Cashews.
  • Green Chilies – 2 pieces
  • Curry Leaves – ¼ cup
  • Asafoetida – ¼ tsp.
  • Onion– ¼ cup
  • Turmeric Powder – 2 pinches
  • Coriander Leaves – ¼ cup
  • Tomatoes – 1 cup.

Note: Finely chop the green chilies, onions and tomatoes. You can reduce the proportion of chopped tomato as preferred to your taste palates. If you do not have Chana dal, then skip adding it. You may use crushed ginger and curry leaves for the tempering of the tomato upma. If you are using oil, use saffola oil.

Method of Making Tomato Upma Recipe:

Whenever you use the semolina, it is very important to roast it before using because of health concerns.

Pre-Preparation:

  • Take a pan and roast rava on medium flame.
  • You have to dry roast rava until it turns crunchy.
  • Make sure, that you are roasting the Rava on a medium heat, or else there are chances that it would burn.
  • Keep stirring the semolina in between.
  • While the rava toasts, you can finish the other tasks.
  • Wash, deseed and cut the tomatoes into small cubes.
  • Take the onions, rinse them and slice them. Also, deseed and slit chop the green chilies.
  • After roasting the Rava keep it aside
  • Set the rava aside for some time and allow it to cool.

Note: Use the thick-bottomed non-stick pan to roast the Rava. Do not over roast the Rava.

Preparation:

  • Clean the pan and add ghee in it.
  • Add Mustard and cumin in it.
  • Now add Urad dal and Chana dal along with cashews in the pan.
  • Sauté the mix till it becomes golden brownish.
  • Add sliced onions, green chillies and curry leaves and sauté it too.
  • Now add tomatoes and turmeric and sauté it for few minutes.
  • Let everything get properly mixed.
  • Now add water and switch to high flame so that water gets boiled faster.
  • Add Salt as per taste.
  • Now as the water gets boiled, start adding the roasted rava and keep stirring it will to avoid lumps.
  • Cover the pan and let it cook until water is absorbed.

And the tangy tomato Upma is ready. Serve it HOT!

Note: Generally upma is thick, but if you want a bit liquid you can add little water at the end.
